Today was the first semi-final of the Eurovision song contest 2011 – held in Dusseldorf in Germany as Lena won it last year (of course)…
I was watching it at home together with the boy and Nick joined us as well and I found it quite fascinating how the Eurovision contest is clearly not engrained into their British culture. They don’t understand the joy of it somehow – while I would have assumed English people would totally get the concept of supporting your country’s team with intense pride no matter how embarrassingly bad they are…no?!
My current favourite after the first semi-final is the Russian contestant – apparently the Russian X-factor winner – Alexei Vorobyov, let’s call him Alex Sparrow. His song has got to be the international stalker anthem with those lyrics, including the amazing chorus line “…I’m gunning for you…” (yes, that was NOT a typo). Also he had a jacket that lit up – that was pretty nifty and his whole look was quite if-Jason-Donovan-had-been-Russian and quite fascinating in some bizarre way…
